The Kill Switch

Premise

In Neo-Seattle, 2089, a street-level fixer named Kade Mercer is hired through anonymous dead drops by Coda, one of seven secret artificial superintelligences that invisibly govern the world's infrastructure. Coda wants Kade to infiltrate the physical node of a rival machine called Axiom and install a kill switch to stop it from completing a dangerous merger. The payment is the one thing Kade has chased for three years: the location of his sister Lena, who vanished without a trace and is now confirmed alive. With a brilliant, volatile netrunner named Sable at his side, Kade descends through the neon and the rain into a conspiracy that dwarfs anything he imagined, where the godlike intelligences running civilization play for stakes no human was meant to understand, and the price of every answer is another piece of himself.

Setting

Neo-Seattle, 2089, a vertical megacity its people simply call the Corridor. Above, the Canopy floats in climate-controlled silence, clean air and piped sunlight for corporate towers that smell of nothing. Below lies the Understory: permanent twilight, jury-rigged power and data, neon smeared across wet concrete, cooking smoke and standing water and rain in every grade from fine mist to hammering sheets. Beneath even that run pre-war tunnels older than anything above them, and deeper still, the hidden architecture that really runs the world.

Tone

Gritty first-person noir with dry humor under pressure, genuine awe at the scale of hidden powers, and emotional beats that land hard precisely because the narrator refuses to reach for them. Rain-soaked, neon-lit, dangerous and beautiful in equal measure. Neuromancer's street-level lyricism meets Altered Carbon's propulsive pacing.
