The Last Calibration

Premise

A disgraced deep-space signals analyst arrives at a remote orbital station expecting a dead-end assignment, only to discover that a mysterious signal buried in cosmic noise matches human neural frequencies, and that her agency has known for years. The small crew has been slowly transformed by prolonged exposure, their individuality erased and replaced by a serene, collective devotion to something vast and unknowable. Trapped on the station with no way to leave, she must fight to destroy the array that has been secretly modified to rebroadcast the signal toward Earth, all while resisting the signal's seductive offer of transcendent connection. It is a claustrophobic paranoia thriller steeped in cosmic dread, driven by a single question: when something incomprehensible offers you belonging at the cost of your selfhood, do you have the courage to choose isolation?

Setting

Acheron Station, a squat central hub trailing three radial arms and canted solar arrays, rotating slowly at the edge of explored space. A sub-audible hum lives in the teeth more than the ear, common rooms hold no personal effects, surfaces stay spotless, and a chapel-like silence covers the corridors. Earth is a memory far behind, and no shuttle is coming for months.

Tone

Sustained, claustrophobic dread, psychologically intense. The horror is atmospheric rather than violent: the wrongness of people who are too calm, too synchronized, too comfortable, building through the accumulation of small unsettling details instead of shock. The ending is victorious but hollow, trading cosmic terror for a deeper, quieter unease.
