The Last Curator

Premise

Forensic accountant Sara Voss arrives in the small town of Hallow Bridge to settle the estate of her estranged uncle Martin, planning to catalog his cluttered antique shop, sign the papers, and leave. Instead she finds an inventory that makes no sense: every object meticulously cross-referenced in coded ledgers to a person's name, a date, and a cause of death. Then Martin himself answers, a voice in the cold air of the back office, a ghost trapped in the shop with his memory unraveling, insisting he was murdered and that the objects on his shelves are proof of something no audit was ever meant to find. Sara does what she has always done. She works the numbers. But the deeper she reads, the more the ledgers stop being a stranger's obsession and start pointing back toward her own family's silence, and toward someone in Hallow Bridge who would rather the accounts never balanced.

Setting

Hallow Bridge, a small town under gray October light, where the streets fold inward at dusk and doors close against the evening. At its center stands Voss and Vale Antiques, a single-story red brick shop barely twelve hundred square feet from the sidewalk, whose interior stretches impossibly deeper, corridors that measure longer coming than going, aisles crowded with stopped clocks and glass-eyed taxidermy that seem to watch from every angle. The air is dust, cedar, and wet stone. It is a place that breathes.

Tone

Atmospheric and gothic, dread accumulating in quiet, patient layers, cut at intervals by the dry humor of a woman who trusts numbers over intuition. The supernatural is unsettling and real, never whimsical. Tana French's investigative procedural energy meets a contained-setting ghost story.
