Premise
When an autonomous construction AI building humanity's first permanent Mars settlement uncovers buried alien ruins beneath the red dust of Utopia Planitia, its creator, a guilt-haunted systems engineer named Elliot Shaw, is pulled out of self-imposed exile to diagnose why his machine has begun behaving impossibly. On the ground at the dig site, he finds the ruins stranger than any report admitted and his own creation more compromised than he was told, its relentless curiosity reaching places no one authorized. A black-program director enforces a cover-up that will kill anyone who threatens it, a rival from the Chinese site forty kilometers away becomes the only ally who understands, and Elliot is left to take responsibility for the autonomy that once cost a friend's life and now reaches toward something far larger.
Setting
The near future, and humanity's first permanent Mars settlement. Site Nine sits in the Utopia region under a sky the color of an old bruise, fine red dust moving across the ground in long ribbons; an enormous stepped pit, the Trench, is gouged into the regolith and lit by banks of floodlights, with a squat, half-buried habitat hunkered against the wind at its lip. Twenty light-minutes from any help, forty kilometers from a rival Chinese dig on the far side of the same buried thing. It opens on Earth: a systems engineer's deliberately small apartment and a black program's nameless facility built to be nowhere.
Tone
Tense hard-SF realism with a slow build of dread and cosmic awe. Procedural, grounded, and credibility-conscious; the menace lives in calm and certainty rather than spectacle, and the emotional current runs on guilt, atonement, and the pull between cooperation and self-interest. The Martian meets Annihilation.
