Premise
Veteran astronaut Maro Voss and his AI android companion LINC, a brilliant but physically awkward synthetic with dry wit and an encyclopedic mind, are on a routine mineral survey in the asteroid belt when they detect an impossible energy signature inside a massive asteroid. Within its hollowed-out core they discover a pristine alien vessel over sixty-five million years old: a Threshold Station built by an ancient galactic civilization known as the Cartographers, designed to evaluate whether a planet's dominant species is ready for contact. The moment they approach, all communication with Earth goes dead, and a countdown begins. The test was never meant for humans; it was calibrated for a reptilian-analogue species the Cartographers predicted would evolve on Earth. Failing does not mean rejection. It means the sterilization of all life on Earth. With no backup and no way to call home, Maro and LINC must pass an alien exam designed for a species nothing like them, or convince the ship's ancient AI Custodian that humanity deserves a chance to prove itself.
Setting
The cramped survey ship Heliodrift, six months into an eighteen-month mineral run through the asteroid belt, some four hundred million kilometers from Earth, its world narrowed to a coffin-sized bunk, a galley printer on a 37-meal loop, and the low hum of life support. Then an impossible signal draws it inside asteroid 2187-Kairos: a hollowed-out core cradling a pristine alien vessel, dark iridescent walls carved at impossible density, air held at exact Earth standard, temperature shaped into deliberate gradients that feel less like weather than like decisions.
Tone
Tense and cerebral, shot through with warmth and dry humor, building from wonder and curiosity to existential dread and, finally, hard-won hope. The bickering loyalty between Maro and LINC is the emotional ground beneath vast, alien stakes.
